Sam Langford vs Ezzard Charles
Langford swarmed Charles early dominating the 1st round and rocking him in the 2nd with a big overhand right. Charles began to find the range in the 3rd and controlled the two rounds with his excellent boxing skills at long range. A sharp Charles right opened a cut over Langford’s left eye in the 6th. Charles cleverly targeted the wound over the next few rounds. By the end of the 9th, Langford’s vision was badly compromised.
Langford stepped up the pace in rounds 10 and 11 forcing Charles to the ropes and punishing him on the inside. Charles controlled the 12th and 13th with sharp counterpunching. Langford dropped Charles with a left hook late in the 14th. Charles rose at the count of 6 and was badly hurt. Langford tried to finish him but Charles managed to survive the round.
Charles started the 15th round on his bicycle and managed to elude danger over the first two minutes of the round. Langford then landed a tremendous right which buckled his knees. Langford battered Charles along the ropes trying to finish him. However, Charles managed to hold on and survive until the final bell rang. Charles was awarded a split decision victory: 143-141, 144-141, 141-143
