Charles gained the edge early out boxing Stribling over the first five rounds. Stribling rocked Charles with a right hand in the 6th and carried his momentum into the 7th and 8th round landing hard punches to the body and head. Rounds 9-11 were fairly even and fairly slow paced. Both men had their moments but neither could gain a decided advantage. Charles rocked Stribling with a hard right in the 12th. Charles continued to have the advantage at long range and by the end of the 13th, Stribling was badly swollen under his left eye. Charles dominated down the stretch in rounds 14 and 15 as Stribling struggled with impaired vision. In the end, Charles wins by unanimous decision 145-140, 145-141, 146-141 on the scorecards.

Gene Tunney vs Michael Spinks
Tunney put on a boxing clinic over the first 4 rounds against Spinks. Spinks looked slow and ponderous next to the fleet footed Tunney. Spinks started to work his way back into the fight in round 5. In the 6th, he hurt Tunney with a big left hook. Tunney was on the defensive in rounds 7 and 8, while Spinks pursued landing effectively to the body. Tunney found Spinks with a crackling right that turned the momentum in round 9. Once again, Tunney’s boxing skills and quickness were too much for Spinks as he dominated rounds 10-12. Spinks landed a hard right which shook Tunney in the 13th but the “Fighting Marine” managed to evade trouble. Tunney rebounded in the 14th and stunned Spinks with a hard right hand of his own.
