Charles built a solid lead over the first 10 rounds putting on a beautiful boxing display against Johnson. Johnson rallied over the next two rounds, rocking Charles with a right hand in the 12th. Charles landed a big right in the 13th which opened a nasty cut over Johnson’s left eye, which became progressively worse over the next two rounds. By the 15th, Johnson was badly behind on points and could no longer see punches coming. The referee stepped in a stopped the fight.

Gene Tunney vs Billy Conn
In a battle of brilliant boxers, Tunney was stronger and more dynamic, landing the harder shots and building a solid points lead over the first 10 rounds. Conn rallied in the 11th but by the 12th he appeared to be tiring and was badly swollen over his right eye. Tunney dominated down the stretch, rocking and nearly stopping Conn in the 14th. However, Conn managed to survive until the final bell. Tunney was awarded the decision by a wide margin: 147-139, 147-140, 146-139.

Michael Spinks vs Jimmy Bivins
Bivins carried the first four rounds over a slow starting Spinks. Spinks gradually worked his way back into the fight with his height, reach, jab and long right hand. Bivins rocked Spinks with a hard right in the 11th and pressed the advantage in the 12th. Spinks assumed command in the 13th and rocked Bivins with a left hook in the 14th. The fight was even after 14 rounds. The fighters went toe to toe in an action packed 15th. A hard right by Bivins hurt Spinks early in the round. However, a left hook, right cross combination by Spinks rocked Bivins late. In the end the fight went to the scorecards. Spinks was awarded a close split decision 144-143, 144-143, 143-144.

Stribling build a solid lead over the first 8 rounds, using his height advantage, thwarting Dillon’s charges and keeping him off balance with hard power shots.
