#1) Sugar Ray Robinson vs #9) Sugar Ray Leonard:
The first five rounds were a chess match. Leonard was slightly quicker off the mark and held a slight lead after 5 rounds. Robinson landed a big left hook in round 6 which rocked Leonard. Leonard spent rounds 7 and 8 on the defensive while Robinson stalked and scored points.
Leonard rallied in the 9th, landing flurries and keeping Robinson off balance with his lateral movement. Robinson landed a quick overhand right which dropped Leonard on his back in round 10. Leonard was up at the count of 6 but badly hurt.
After tasting Robinson's power, Leonard got on his bicycle over the next three rounds while Robinson methodically pursued, landing effectively to the body.
Realizing he was behind on points, Leonard planted his feet in the 14th and traded with Robinson, stealing the round with a late flurry. Robinson found Leonard with a big left hook halfway through the 15th round. Robinson battered Leonard along the ropes but SRL refused to fall. He was outgunned but continued to couragely fire back.
The fight would go to the scorecards. Robinson wins by unanimous decision: 146-139, 145-139, 145-140. Robinson advances to the finals to meet the winner of Hagler-Greb.
