#2) Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. #5) Harry Greb:
Hagler carries the first three rounds, keeping Greb on the end of his jab and moving cleverly to avoid his charges. The first meaningful exchanges of the fight occurred in rounds 4 and 5. Hagler's punches were harder but Greb's swarming tactics and volume punching were effective, keeping Hagler off balance. Greb lost a point for repeated low blows in the 6th.
Rounds 7-9 featured tremendous toe to toe action. Hagler spent much of the time on the ropes but was countering effectively with hard shots. A clash of heads, initiated by Hagler, opened a nasty cut over Greb's right eye in the 10th. Hagler targeted the wound with his jab and by the end of the 12th Greb's face was a bloody mess.
Greb rallied in the 13th, pushing Hagler against the ropes and punishing him to the body. Greb was penalized again in the 14th for low blows. Hagler was enraged by the fouling and savagely tore into Greb for the remainder of the round.
Both men fired away with impunity in a tremendous 15th round with both men engaging in furious toe to toe action. Greb rocked Hagler early in the round with a left hook but Hagler answered late with a vicious right uppercut which sent Greb stumbling back. This fight would go to the scorecards. The judges awarded the fight to Hagler by majority decision: 143-140, 143-141, and 142-142. Hagler moves on to the finals to face Sugar Ray Robinson.
