#3) Carlos Monzon vs. #14) Marcel Cerdan:
Cerdan took advantage of a slow starting Monzon, building a solid lead over the first 8 rounds. However, Monzon assumed command in the 9th. He controlled the next five rounds with his crisp, accurate punching, rocking Cerdan in the 11th and 12th with hard right hands.
The fighters went toe to toe in the 14th, each looking to put his stamp on a very close fight. Monzon was the fresher fighter down the stretch finishing strong against a tired Cerdan.
Most ringside observers felt Monzon deserved the decision based on his work in the second half of the fight. However, two of the three judges disagreed scoring the fight for Cerdan 144-142 and 143-142. The third scored for Monzon 144-141. Marcel Cerdan wins by a close (and controversial) split decision and advances to the round of 8.

#6) Roy Jones Jr. vs. #11) Mickey Walker:
Jones easily out-boxed Walker over the first six rounds. However, the tide turned when Walker's found Jones' left eye with an educated thumb in the 7th. Jones' eye immediately swelled shut. In spite of vehement protests from Jones and his corner, the referee either did not see this or chose to ignore it.
Walker took full advantage battering the impaired Jones over the next several rounds. This 24 year old, Middleweight version, of Jones had never faced a beast like Walker and the lack of experience was now showing. Walker dropped an exhausted Jones in the 13th with a wicked right. Jones' handlers stopped the fight in the corner to save their fighter from further punishment. Walker wins by TKO and advances to the round of 8.

WALKER: WINS- 54 (BY DECISION- 29, BY KO/TKO- 25)
JONES: WINS- 39 (BY DECISION- 28, BY KO/TKO- 11)

#8) Dick Tiger vs #9) Sugar Ray Leonard:
Leonard built a huge lead over the first 10 rounds confounding Tiger with his speed and combination punching. Leonard seemed to tire in the 11th and 12th and the fight became interesting.
Tiger began to find Leonard with left hooks to the body and head. Tiger dominated early in the 13th but Leonard rallied with blistering flurries late to steal the round. Tiger came on strong in the 14th rocking Leonard with a left hook and battering him along the ropes.
Leonard got on his bicycle in round 15 and closed strong in the final 30 seconds of the fight. His flurries that didn't hurt Tiger, but impressed the crowd and the judges.
