From the beginning, the 5’6’’ Pacquiao was badly overmatched against the 6’1’’ Hearns. Manny tried to work his way inside early but was staggered by a Hearns right in round 1. Over the next four rounds, he remained on the defensive, unable to get inside without paying a heavy price. Finally, Tommy closed the show in the 6th, landing a vicious right that left Pacquiao unconscious and flat on his back.

Burley administered a painful and convincing boxing lesson to Trinidad from the beginning of the fight. He avoided Trinidad’s power shots and dropped him twice, in the 8th and 13th, with wicked counter right hands. A tough fight with several momentum swings: Ryan had the better of it over the first five rounds, out boxing Basilio. Basilio rallied in the middle rounds to even up the fight. By the 12th round, Basilio was badly swollen under both eyes and it was target practice for Ryan, who dominated late. In the end, Ryan wins by majority decision (145-141), (144-141), (143-143)

Rodriguez out boxed Palomino in a workman like fashion over the course of the fight. His movement confused and frustrated Palomino and in the end he was just too skilled. Rodriguez wins by unanimous decision (146-140), (147-139), (147-138) on the scorecards.

This was a battle of excellent boxers which was even after 10 rounds. In the 11th, a Dempsey right opened a nasty cut over Napoles’ right eye. A desperate Napoles stepped up the pace in the 12th, opening up with power shots and dropping Dempsey with a right hand. Dempsey rose at the count of 6, but Mantequilla trapped him in the corner and pounded him mercilessly forcing the referee to stop the fight.
