#1) Joe Louis vs #8) Jack Sharkey: Louis dominated this fight from the start working behind the jab and picking Sharkey apart with hard, accurate punching. Louis finished Sharkey in the 8th, dropping him 3 times before the referee stepped in and mercifully stopped the fight. Louis TKO 8.
#4) Ezzard Charles vs #5) Jersey Joe Walcott: Charles held a comfortable lead through 12 rounds in the 5th matchup between these two rivals. Charles was more accurate landing at 42% compared to 34% for Walcott. Walcott rallied over the final three rounds, flooring Charles in the 15th with a left hook. However, this wasn’t enough to offset Charles’ early lead. Charles wins by majority decision (144-142, 143-142, 143-143).
#2) Rocky Marciano vs #7) Max Schmeling: Schmeling had the edge over the first six rounds, countering effectively and finding Marciano with his right end. Marciano turned the momentum in the 7th, trapping Schmeling against the ropes and pounding him to the body. Marciano ended matters in the 8th, landing an overhand right which sent Schmeling to the canvas for a 10 count. Marciano KO 8.
#3) Gene Tunney vs #6) Max Baer: Tunney pitched a virtual shutout over the first 12 rounds, dominating with his boxing skills and accurate punching. For the fight, Tunney landed an incredible 62% of his punches, compared with only 24% for Baer. By the 13th, Baer was badly cut over both eyes, prompting the referee to stop the fight. Tunney TKO 13.
