Montana led the 49ers on a 76 yard touchdown drive capped off by a Montana to John Taylor 12 yard touchdown connection. San Francisco had their first lead of the game, 17-14, with 6:01 remaining. Led by Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers rallied putting together an 80 yard drive. This was capped off by a Bradshaw to Swann 11 yard touchdown pass. Pittsburgh now led 21-17 with 1:41 remaining in the game.
The 49ers took over on their own 23. Montana drove them 6 plays to the Steelers 17 with 0:33 remaining in the game. Two plays later, the 49ers faced 3rd and 7 from the 14.
