BOB FITZSIMMONS VS EVANDER HOLYFIELD
Holyfield carried the first two rounds, working his jab and out boxing Fitzsimmons on the outside. Fitzsimmons found the range in the 3rd, rocking Evander with a hard right hand. The fighters brawled on the inside in rounds 4 and 5. By the end of the 5th, both men were cut, Fitzsimmons more seriously than Holyfield.
A tremendous Fitzsimmons right sent Holyfield crashing to the canvas in round 6. Holyfield rose at the count of 7 and Fitzsimmons battered him for the remainder of the round. Fitzsimmons had the better of it over the next two rounds, pounding him to the body and repeatedly nailing him with the right cross.
Holyfield turned the tide in round 9, nearly tearing Fitzsimmons head off with a left hook. By the end of the 9th, Fitzsimmons was badly bloodied over his right eye. Holyfield dropped Fitzsimmons with a tremendous right in the 10th and battered him along the ropes, nearly stopping him. The ring doctor looked at the Fitzsimmons cut between rounds and reluctantly allowed the fight to continue.
A desperate Fitzsimmons came out like a man possessed in round 11, rocking Holyfield early in the round with a right uppercut. Evander refused to take a backwards step and the fighters engaged in a brutal exchange. As the round came to a close, Holyfield landed a wicked left hook and Fitzsimmons responded with a nasty right to the stomach.
This was Fitzsimmons last hurrah. Holyfield dropped him with a left hook early in the 12th. By now, Fitzsimmons was bloodied over both eyes. Evander trapped him against the ropes and landed 12 unanswered punches. This prompted the referee to step in and stop the fight. Evander Holyfield is the all-time Cruiserweight champion. He moves on to a 4-way tournament including our Heavyweight finalists, Muhammad Ali/Joe Louis, and our All-time Light Heavyweight champion, Gene Tunney.
